Ruta del Amber Chiapas Highland Explorer

Ancient amber mines through Maya cloud forests

Difficult

This backcountry route penetrates the amber-rich highlands of northern Chiapas, where Tzeltal Maya communities have extracted fossilized tree resin for centuries. The 85-kilometer circuit winds through cloud forests and pine-oak woodlands, connecting active amber mines near Simojovel with hidden archaeological sites where ancient Maya quarried obsidian and jade. The notorious Lodo de la Muerte section becomes nearly impassable during rainy season, with clay-rich soil that can trap vehicles axle-deep in minutes. At Cerro Huitepec, the route climbs through switchbacks carved into limestone cliffs, offering glimpses of amber deposits glinting in road cuts.

This is challenging terrain requiring 4WD with aggressive tread tires and mud grips. The highland climate means temperatures can drop to freezing at night year-round, while summer rains (May-October) turn clay roads into slick nightmares. Best attempted during dry season (November-April) with local guides who know current road conditions. Carry tire chains, recovery gear, and warm clothing. Many communities along the route offer homestays and amber purchases directly from miners. Those who complete this circuit experience authentic Maya culture and some of Chiapas’ most pristine highland wilderness.
