Flinders Ranges Outback Loop

This demanding loop through the northern Flinders Ranges combines some of South Australia’s most technical 4WD terrain with stunning geological formations dating back 540 million years. The circuit includes the notorious descent at Sliding Rock, where AWD’s drag their bellies down steep sandstone ledges, and the narrow squeeze through Chambers Gorge, where 19th-century explorers carved their names into red rock walls. The route connects via the Strzelecki Track, passing abandoned copper mining settlements and offering glimpses of yellow-footed rock wallabies in the early morning.

This is difficult-grade wheeling that demands genuine 4WD skills and proper equipment. Stock vehicles will struggle — low-range gearing, rock sliders, and all-terrain tires are minimum requirements. Avoid summer months when temperatures soar past 40°C; May to September offers perfect conditions. No permits needed for most sections, but check current access to Aboriginal lands. Carry extra fuel and water for the remote stretches. Successfully completing this loop puts you in the company of serious Australian 4WDers who know their way around challenging terrain.
