Elkhorn Mountains Crest Road

Montana's gnarliest ridge traverse

Expert

The Elkhorn Mountains Crest Road strings together three abandoned mining camps across 42 miles of Montana’s most underrated alpine terrain. Starting from Elkhorn Ghost Town (population: zero), this former mining supply route climbs to 8,400 feet along knife-edge ridges with thousand-foot drops on both sides. The technical crux hits at Tizer Basin—loose rock switchbacks that’ll test your clutch work and nerve as you navigate around washouts and exposure that makes Imogene Pass look tame.

This is expert-level wheeling requiring modified suspension, rock sliders, and serious mountain driving experience. The road surface alternates between embedded granite and loose talus that can shift under load. Late July through September only—snow lingers past Fourth of July most years. Zero services, zero cell coverage, but maximum reward for those who complete it. Camping is limited to designated spots near Queen City and Elkhorn ruins. Bring recovery gear and a GPS—missing the main route can strand you on dead-end mining spurs.
