Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park — Elder Range Foot Track Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Pull off the Rica Roca Track and drop into one of the creek flats that sit at the foot of the Elder Range between Parachilna and Blinman. Rocky red ranges wall you in on both sides, river red gums shade the creekbed, and on a clear night the sky above this gorge country is absolutely savage. This is classic Flinders camping — no facilities, no fences, no noise except wind through quartzite. Fires are permitted in accordance with SA total fire ban days; bring your own firewood or use a gas stove. Cell service: essentially zero.

Access is via the Rica Roca Track itself — a rocky, corrugated dirt route requiring a high-clearance 4WD, particularly through the gorge sections. The track becomes impassable after heavy rain when creek crossings flood. Best visited April through October; summer heat (40°C+) makes the area genuinely dangerous. Check SA National Parks current conditions before departing Blinman or Parachilna.

Red range creek flat, zero facilities, all sky.
