Sierra de San Pedro Martir Observatory Road

Baja's mountain observatory access road

Moderate

The Sierra de San Pedro Martir Observatory Road ascends from the desert floor to Mexico’s premier astronomical facility, winding 42 kilometers through pine and fir forests that seem impossible in Baja California. Starting at the park entrance near San Telmo, the route climbs steadily through chaparral before entering stands of Jeffrey pine and sugar pine that wouldn’t look out of place in the Sierra Nevada. The road terminates at 9,200 feet at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional, where some of the world’s most powerful telescopes peer into space from one of North America’s clearest skies.

This is moderate overlanding that any stock high-clearance vehicle can handle in dry conditions, though winter snow from December through March can make the upper elevations impassable without chains. The gravel surface is well-maintained to service the observatory, but steep grades and tight switchbacks demand careful driving. Park entry fee required plus advance permits for overnight camping in designated areas. Best visited April through November when weather cooperates and wildflowers bloom in mountain meadows. What you get is a glimpse into Mexico’s scientific side and camping among mountain peaks that few realize exist in Baja, with night skies so dark you’ll understand why astronomers chose this spot.
