Danskin Mountains Loop (Forest Road 268A)

The Danskin Mountains Loop connects a network of ridge-running fire roads through some of Idaho’s most rugged desert-mountain terrain, passing the remains of three Depression-era fire lookout towers. The route climbs steep rocky pitches above Rabbit Creek, with the notorious “Danskin Staircase”—a series of ledged rock shelves at mile 8 that separates the weekend warriors from serious wheelers, demanding careful line choice and spotters.

This difficult trail requires experienced drivers with lockers, skid plates, and 33-inch tires minimum for the technical rock sections and loose shale descents. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer heat that makes the exposed ridgelines brutal. No services for 60 miles, so pack extra water and recovery gear. Multiple primitive campsites exist along Rabbit Creek, and the reward is 360-degree views across the Treasure Valley with zero crowds and plenty of wildlife.
