Freeman Peak Road (Forest Road 135)

Fire tower views earned through rocky punishment.

Difficult

Freeman Peak Road is a punishing 12-mile climb that separates the serious from the weekend warriors. Starting from the Boise Basin near Pioneerville, this steep forest road switchbacks up Freeman Peak’s south face, gaining 2,800 feet through loose rock and tight turns. The final 3 miles are the real test — sustained grades over 15% with embedded rocks that’ll high-center anything without decent clearance. The payoff is the active fire lookout at 8,973 feet with views across the entire Boise drainage.

This rates as difficult terrain requiring high clearance 4WD and low-range gearing for the steep sections. Memorial Day through October offers the best window, but check with the Boise National Forest for snow conditions at elevation. No permits needed, though camping is limited to designated areas near the base. The lookout staff are friendly if they’re in residence, and the sunrise views justify every scraped skid plate on the way up.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler make it up Freeman Peak Road?

Yes, but barely. The rocky sections and steep grades will test your stock clearance and approach angles. Skid plates are highly recommended.

Is Freeman Peak Road accessible in early spring?

Snow blocks the upper sections until May, sometimes later. Even in summer, afternoon thunderstorms can make the rocks dangerously slick.

Do I need a permit to drive Freeman Peak Road?

No permits required. It's open Forest Service land with free dispersed camping allowed along the route.

What's the hardest part of this trail?

The final 2 miles to the fire tower are the worst — loose rock on steep grades that'll have you crawling in low range. Several spots require precise wheel placement.

How's cell service on Freeman Peak?

Spotty to nonexistent for most of the trail, but you'll get bars at the fire tower summit due to the elevation and clear sightlines.
