Hiawatha National Forest Au Train River Dispersed Sites
A handful of well-established dispersed sites line the Au Train River about 15 miles south of Munising, each tucked into pockets of maple and birch forest. The river runs clear and cold year-round, perfect for filtering water. Sites accommodate single rigs only — no room for big groups. Popular with kayakers and trout fishermen, especially during steelhead runs in spring and fall. Fire rings and cleared areas show decades of use.
Forest Road 2276 provides access — decent gravel but narrow with blind curves. Sites fill on summer weekends but midweek you’ll likely have the place to yourself. Mosquitoes can be brutal in June and July. No cell service, which is exactly the point.
