Maine’s Passadumkeag Mountain Road
Climb to Maine's forgotten fire tower ruins
Passadumkeag Mountain Road climbs through second-growth forest to the ruins of a Depression-era fire tower, offering panoramic views across central Maine’s timber country. The road starts innocuously enough from Route 6, but quickly degrades into a rocky, rutted climb that’ll have you questioning your suspension. At the 1,463-foot summit, concrete footings mark where the old steel tower stood guard over millions of acres of spruce and fir until the 1970s when aerial surveillance made it obsolete.
This is proper Maine backwoods driving — expect loose rocks, water bars, and sections steep enough to need momentum. Stock 4WD handles it fine in dry conditions, but wet weather turns the clay sections into skating rinks. Best from June through October when the foliage shows off. No permits needed, but bring bug spray because Maine’s state bird (the blackfly) considers you dinner. The payoff is solitude and views that stretch to Mount Katahdin on clear days.
