West Branch Pleasant River Road

The West Branch Pleasant River Road cuts a rough line through some of Maine’s most isolated timber country, following an old logging route that once hauled massive pine logs to the mills downstream. This 18-mile gravel and dirt track starts near Brownville Junction and winds northwest through dense spruce-fir forest, crossing the West Branch Pleasant River multiple times on wooden bridges that creak under your truck’s weight. The road passes remnants of Depression-era lumber camps at Mile 12, where rusted equipment still sits where loggers abandoned it in 1934.

This is moderate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD for the river crossings and muddy sections after rain. Spring brings black flies and washouts, making late summer through early fall the sweet spot for running this route. No permits needed, but fuel up in Dover-Foxcroft—there’s nothing out here but woods and memories. What you get is pure Maine wilderness solitude and some of the best brook trout fishing in the state, plus camping spots along the river that haven’t changed since the logging days.
