Table Mesa Road
Cathedral pines and rim country views in high Arizona.
Table Mesa Road cuts a straight line across the Colorado Plateau’s high country, threading through cathedral groves of 400-year-old ponderosa pines that somehow escaped the loggers’ saws. The forest road starts near Flagstaff and runs 35 miles through classic Arizona high country, crossing meadows where elk graze and offering glimpses of the Mogollon Rim’s dramatic escarpment. Past Fisher Point, the road becomes rougher as it approaches the mesa’s edge with panoramic views stretching to the San Francisco Peaks.
This moderate route needs high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but 4WD is smart during monsoon season when clay turns treacherous. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and muddy conditions — early morning starts are best. No permits needed, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. It’s a perfect introduction to Arizona’s high country without the technical challenges, offering solitude among some of the state’s most impressive old-growth forest.
