Spread across 13,000 acres of ancient volcanic terrain north of Flagstaff, Cinder Hills OHV Area offers some of Arizona’s most diverse off-road terrain. Black volcanic cinders create natural rally stages between towering cinder cones, while rocky washes and forest trails challenge technical skills. The main loop system connects Bonito Park to the volcanic fields, passing through areas where astronauts once trained for moon missions among the otherworldly landscape.
Difficulty ranges from easy forest roads to extreme technical rock sections, making this suitable for any vehicle from stock SUVs to built rigs. Open year-round, though winter snow can limit access to higher elevations. No permits required, and camping is allowed throughout the area. Fuel up in Flagstaff—this 7,000-foot elevation playground burns gas fast, but delivers endless exploration opportunities and some of Arizona’s most unique geology.

Yes. Stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles are the minimum requirement and handle this area without issue. Air down your tires for the cinder surface — it makes a significant difference in traction and ride quality.
When does Cinder Hills close for the season, and is snow a real issue up there?
The area runs best April through November. At 7,200 feet near Flagstaff, early spring and late fall can bring snow or soft, muddy cinder that'll swallow tires — check conditions before you go.
Do I need a permit or OHV sticker to run Cinder Hills?
No permit is required, but Arizona-registered OHVs must have a current OHV decal. Out-of-state vehicles are generally exempt, but carry your registration. The area is managed by Coconino National Forest and there's no day-use fee.
What's the hardest section actually like, and can a newer driver handle it?
There's no genuinely technical section here — the difficulty comes from loose cinder swallowing momentum if you're on street pressure tires. Air down, maintain steady throttle, and newer drivers will be fine.
Is there water available anywhere in the Cinder Hills area, or do I need to carry everything from Flagstaff?
There is no water available on the trail. Flagstaff is roughly 15 miles away — fill up completely before you leave town and plan for everything you'll need for your full stay.
