Haul Road (Dalton Highway)

Alaska's legendary road to the Arctic Ocean

Moderate

The James W. Dalton Highway stretches 414 brutal miles from Livengood to Deadhorse, paralleling the Trans-Alaska Pipeline through some of North America’s most unforgiving terrain. Built in 1974 to service the oil fields, this gravel highway climbs over Atigun Pass at 4,739 feet — the highest road pass in Alaska — and crosses the Arctic Circle at Mile 115. Massive 18-wheelers rule this road, kicking up windshield-destroying rock missiles while you navigate washboard sections, steep grades, and weather that can shift from blazing sun to whiteout conditions in minutes.

This is a moderate difficulty route that any vehicle can technically handle, but don’t underestimate it — carry multiple spare tires, extra fuel, food for several days, and comprehensive repair supplies. Summer offers 24-hour daylight but also road construction and dust clouds. Winter brings ice, darkness, and temperatures that’ll freeze your coolant. No permits needed, but fuel stops are scarce: Yukon River Camp (Mile 56), Coldfoot (Mile 175), and Deadhorse (Mile 414). It’s Alaska’s ultimate road trip — a genuine adventure that’ll test your vehicle, your nerve, and your respect for the Last Frontier.
