Adirondack Park North Lake Road

Deep Adirondack backcountry to forgotten logging camps

Moderate

North Lake Road cuts deep into the Adirondack Park’s most remote sector, following an old logging railroad grade through dense boreal forest to a cluster of pristine mountain lakes. The route passes remnants of early 1900s lumber camps, including stone foundations and rusted equipment scattered through the woods. Key waypoints include the abandoned Santanoni Railroad trestle crossing and the historic Camp Santanoni preserve access point. The road deteriorates significantly after mile 12, becoming a rocky, root-strewn track that demands careful line choice through muddy sections and over granite outcrops.

This is a legitimate backcountry challenge requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Mud season (April-May) makes the route impassable, while winter access requires snowmobiles. Best tackled June through October when the worst ruts have dried out. No permits needed but register at the trailhead. Carry extra fuel and water – the nearest services are 45 miles away in Newcomb. You’ll earn access to some of the Adirondacks’ most pristine fishing and camping spots, with opportunities to spot moose, bear, and the occasional lynx.
