Sleeping Bear Dunes Backcountry Beach Route
Sand dunes meet Great Lakes adventure
The beach route along Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore throws you into deep sand driving where 400-foot sand mountains meet Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Starting from the Glen Haven Beach access, this route winds through backdune valleys and climbs technical sand faces to Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive overlooks. The notorious Dune Climb section tests your sand driving skills with steep ascents that’ll have your engine working and tires spinning if you’re not carrying momentum.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — summer crowds and wet sand make it easier, but spring and fall demand proper technique. Stock 4WD with sand-rated tires minimum, though aired-down all-terrains work fine. No permits required but stay on designated routes. Best April through October when beach access isn’t restricted. You’ll earn expansive Lake Michigan views and some of the most unique dune ecosystems in North America.
