Owyhee Canyonlands Backcountry — Jordan Valley to Rome via Three Forks
Oregon's forgotten canyon country.
The Owyhee Canyonlands in southeastern Oregon are one of the great underrated overland destinations in the American West — raw high desert carved by the Owyhee River into a maze of 1,000-foot basalt canyons. The route from Jordan Valley heads south and west toward Three Forks, where the North Fork, Middle Fork, and main Owyhee converge in a spot accessible only by river or this road. The crossing at Three Forks is the crux — water levels vary wildly and what’s a knee-deep wade in August can be a serious flood crossing in spring. Petroglyphs, hot springs, and bighorn sheep sightings are standard fare out here.
This is a Moderate to Difficult route depending heavily on season and recent precipitation. The dirt roads turn to boot-sucking gumbo after rain and become completely impassable — no exceptions. Run it in a high-clearance 4WD with good all-terrain tires, a full-size spare, recovery gear, and at least two days of extra food and water. The Owyhee is BLM land and dispersed camping is wide open. Best season is late spring after snowmelt or early fall. The nearest fuel is Jordan Valley, Oregon — fill up there and don’t assume you’ll find anything else. This is the Oregon that most Oregonians have never seen.
