Manistee National Forest Lost Lake Loop
Historic logging roads through Michigan's backcountry
The Lost Lake Loop cuts through some of Michigan’s thickest forest on old logging roads that haven’t seen maintenance since the CCC boys packed up in the ’40s. This 18-mile circuit connects three backcountry lakes through the Manistee National Forest, following skid roads that lumber crews carved out when white pine was king. The real test comes at Twin Creek Crossing where spring runoff turns a simple ford into a muddy commitment that’ll have you questioning your ground clearance.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and rocky sections, plus recovery gear for the inevitable stuck-in-mud scenario. Best tackled May through October when the roads dry out enough to be passable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Baldwin because there’s nothing out here except mosquitoes and memories of Michigan’s logging heyday. You’ll earn every mile of this loop through genuine Michigan wilderness.
