Lakeview to Fremont-Winema — Oregon Outback Volcanic Plateau Run

High desert Oregon. Big sky. Nobody watching.

Moderate

Oregon’s high desert gets overlooked in favor of the coast and the Cascades, which is exactly why you should go. Out of Lakeview — the self-proclaimed windiest town in America — this route tracks northwest across the volcanic plateau on a combination of county gravel roads and BLM two-track through Fremont-Winema National Forest, passing Abert Rim (one of the longest exposed fault scarps in North America at nearly 2,500 feet), alkaline lake flats, and sage-covered benches that stretch to the horizon. Pronghorn are everywhere. The road surfaces are packed pumice, volcanic gravel, and occasional soft dirt that gets rough after any moisture.

This is an Overland Route more than a technical crawler — moderate difficulty, but the remoteness is what demands respect. A high-clearance 4WD is ideal; recovery gear, extra fuel, and water are non-negotiable. The nearest services are Lakeview to the south and Paisley to the north, both small. Cell service is effectively zero across the plateau. Best season is late May through October — winter snow and spring mud close chunks of this route regularly. Dispersed camping is widespread and legal on BLM and Forest Service ground. The payoff is a big sky, almost no traffic, and a genuine feel of Oregon that most people never find.
