Chemin du Nord — Réserve faunique Papineau-Labelle Interior Circuit

Laurentian mud and lake country, right off the highway.

Moderate

The Réserve faunique Papineau-Labelle sits about 150 km north of Montréal and it’s one of the most accessible wilderness blocks in Quebec for overlanders coming out of the city. The main Chemin du Nord route and its offshoots form a circuit linking Lac Gagnon, Lac de la Montagne Noire, and the upper Petite-Nation River drainage. These roads are genuine forestry tracks — not graded park roads — and they flood badly in early spring, producing soft shoulders, hidden axle-deep puddles, and the occasional washed-out bridge that shows up without warning. The network is best studied on a SÉPAQ map before you leave because the signage is minimal and dead ends are real.

A true 4WD with lockers and skid plates will handle this comfortably; a lifted all-terrain truck without a locker will get by in summer but will get into trouble in wet conditions. The reserve charges a daily access fee and fishing permits are available for over 60 lakes inside the boundary — brown trout and brook trout are the draw. Best season is June through October. Fuel in Lac-des-Plages or Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix before entering. Dispersed camping is available at designated wilderness sites throughout the reserve. If you’re looking for a shakedown run within driving distance of a major city, this is Quebec’s answer.
