Boise Ridge Road
Idaho's ultimate alpine ridge challenge
Boise Ridge Road (Forest Road 374) follows the spine of the Boise Mountains for 40 miles of serious high-altitude driving between Bogus Basin and Trinity Lakes. The route climbs above 8,000 feet through subalpine fir forests and across exposed granite ridges, offering commanding views of the Sawtooth Wilderness to the north and Snake River Plain spreading endlessly south. Key waypoints include Mores Mountain Lookout and the technical descent into Grimes Creek, where loose rock and steep grades test both nerves and brakes.
This is expert-level terrain requiring 4WD low-range capability, aggressive tread tires, and solid mechanical preparation. Rocky ledges, off-camber sections, and potential snow patches through July make this no place for inexperienced drivers. Best accessed July through September when the high country clears. Carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear – the nearest services are in Boise, hours away. The solitude and alpine camping opportunities among the Trinity Lakes make this one of Idaho’s premier backcountry challenges.
