Trans-Siberian Taiga Backroad (R255)
3,200km taiga crossing parallel to Trans-Siberian
The R255 runs as an unofficial parallel to the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, cutting 3,200 kilometers of gravel and broken pavement through the heart of Russia’s taiga wilderness from Novosibirsk to Chita. This is the route Soviet truckers used when the railway couldn’t handle the load, threading through endless forests of birch and pine broken only by swollen rivers and forgotten mining settlements. The notorious Lena River crossing at Yakutsk becomes a hours-long ferry ride in summer or a terrifying ice road gamble in winter.
This is serious expedition-level overlanding requiring self-sufficiency for weeks at a stretch. Stock vehicles will struggle with the washouts, river crossings, and endless corrugated gravel that’ll shake your fillings loose. Plan on 10-14 days minimum with spare everything — fuel, food, and recovery gear. Best tackled June through August when rivers are down and weather cooperates. The reward is crossing the largest wilderness on earth, camping under skies that never fully darken in summer, and experiencing Russia as few foreigners ever will.
