Trans-Altai Adventure Route

Eagle hunters' domain in the high Altai

Extreme

The Trans-Altai route connects Bayan-Ölgii in western Mongolia with Gorno-Altaisk in Russia’s Altai Republic, threading through territory where Kazakh eagle hunters still practice ancient traditions. River crossings at the Khovd and Kobdo demand careful timing with spring snowmelt, while the Tavan Bogd massif’s glacial peaks tower over moonscape valleys dotted with Soviet-era mining camps. Border formalities at Tsagaannuur can take hours, and fuel becomes scarce beyond Tolbo.

This is extreme overlanding requiring self-sufficiency for 400+ miles of rough track, river fords, and alpine passes above 10,000 feet. High-clearance 4WD essential, with recovery gear, spare parts, and emergency food mandatory. June to September only, with permits required for border zones. The reward: untouched wilderness, eagle hunting demonstrations, and camping under the Milky Way in some of Asia’s most remote terrain. Have a dirty day.
