Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Road
Idaho's hidden desert canyonlands challenge.
This forgotten mining road drops into the Owyhee Canyonlands where red rock walls tower 1,000 feet above ancient creek beds. The route follows old wagon tracks to Silver City and then pushes deeper into roadless country where Shoshone war parties once ambushed miners. Expect loose rock shelves, narrow ledges above the Owyhee River, and several technical descents that separate the committed from the casual. The landscape feels more like Utah than Idaho—endless sagebrush punctuated by slot canyons and volcanic spires.
Expert-level difficulty demands experienced drivers and modified 4WD vehicles with skid plates, recovery gear, and at least 35-inch tires. Summer heat makes this dangerous; stick to April-May or October. No cell service, no water sources, and 80 miles from the nearest gas station. But you’ll have some of Idaho’s most dramatic backcountry to yourself, plus access to abandoned mines and Basque sheep camps that tell the real story of the American West.
