Mengel Pass Trail

Technical Death Valley crossing through Kingston Range

Difficult

Mengel Pass cuts through the Kingston Range between Death Valley and Mojave Preserve, following a route miners blasted in the early 1900s to haul silver ore from Tecopa. The trail climbs relentlessly through Joshua tree country before hitting the technical section — a mile-long boulder field where careful wheel placement is everything. Mesquite Flat Mine ruins mark the halfway point, while the actual pass offers views into both Death Valley and Ivanpah Valley. Bighorn sheep use this corridor regularly, and you’ll see their tracks in the sandy washes between rock sections.

This is solid Difficult terrain requiring high clearance and low-range gearing, with multiple spots demanding precise line choice through basketball-sized rocks. Skid plates essential, rock sliders recommended. Spring and fall offer the best conditions — summer heat makes this genuinely dangerous, while winter snow can close the high country. No permits needed, but check with Mojave Preserve rangers for seasonal closures. Dispersed camping available at either end, but pack all water and expect zero cell service. The technical challenge and total isolation make this a proper wilderness experience, not a casual afternoon drive.
