McArthur Game Sanctuary Road — Swift River to Morley Lake
Yukon's forgotten game country to Morley Lake.
Most drivers blow past the Swift River junction on the Alaska Highway without a second look. That’s a mistake. The road south toward Morley Lake cuts through the heart of the McArthur Game Sanctuary — moose country, wolf country, and almost nobody else. The route follows an old government access track through boreal flats and willow draws before climbing into open terrain above Morley Lake’s north end. The lake itself sits in a glacially carved bowl at roughly 2,400 feet, backdropped by the Cassiar Mountains across the BC border. Expect soft shoulders, standing water across the track after rain, and sections of deep gravel that push loose in the heat.
This is a moderate-difficulty route — nothing that’ll break a well-equipped rig if you’re paying attention, but soft ground and remoteness will punish unpreparedness. A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum. No services exist between the Alaska Highway junction and Morley Lake, roughly 65 km. No fuel, no cell service, no rescue. Best run late June through September when the ground firms up. No permit required. Dispersed camping on the lake’s shore is the reward — solitude, fishing, and a sky that gets dark enough to mean something.
