McArthur Wildlife Sanctuary — Swift River to Morley Lake Mining Road
Muskeg, moose, and a lake nobody visits.
Pull off the Campbell Highway near Swift River and head into terrain most Yukon travellers blow past at speed. This rough spur road punches through dense spruce and muskeg country toward Morley Lake, passing through the McArthur Wildlife Sanctuary — a seldom-visited protected area that sees more bush planes than overlanders. The track follows old mining access routes, crosses several unnamed creeks with no formal crossings, and delivers you to Morley Lake’s reed-fringed shore with zero ceremony and zero crowds. Expect soft shoulders, washed-out sections, and deadfall that hasn’t been cleared recently.
High-clearance 4WD minimum, lockers strongly recommended once the ground softens post-snowmelt. Mid-June through early September is your window — the road turns to axle-deep muck in spring and after heavy rain. No permit required, no services, no cell service. Carry at minimum two days of fuel and water past Watson Lake. What you get: genuine solitude, exceptional wildlife viewing, and the quiet satisfaction of reaching a pristine subarctic lake that most Yukoners have never set foot beside.
