McArthur Wildlife Sanctuary Road — Teslin Lake to Nisutlin Bay
Tlingit country, muskeg, and zero crowds.
The Nisutlin Bay and Teslin Lake area in southern Yukon doesn’t get the overlanding attention of the Dempster or the Canol, but that’s exactly why you go. The track runs from the Alaska Highway junction near Teslin out along the eastern arm of Teslin Lake, winding through dense boreal forest and muskeg flats before reaching the Nisutlin Bay delta — one of the most productive wildlife corridors in southern Yukon. Moose are almost guaranteed, woodland caribou appear seasonally, and wolves work this country hard. The Teslin Tlingit Council holds traditional territory throughout this area and the connection to the land here is tangible. Wooden fishing camps, fish wheel frames, and cut portage trails remind you that people have been reading this landscape for thousands of years.
The track is soft in places and muskeg crossings require real 4×4 capability — lockers strongly recommended after any rain. The route is not regularly maintained and can deteriorate quickly in wet years. Fuel must be carried from Teslin, which has limited supply. Cell service is nonexistent. The best run is July through early September when the ground firms up and the delta is alive. Dispersed camping is available throughout but be bear aware and carry appropriate deterrents. This one rewards patience and preparation with a level of quiet that’s becoming genuinely rare.
