Liard River Hot Springs Highway Access Road
Natural hot springs via Alaska Highway
Mile 496 of the Alaska Highway marks the turnoff for one of BC’s hidden gems—the Liard River Hot Springs access road winds 2.5 kilometers through dense boreal forest to Alpha and Beta pools, natural hot springs that stay 42°C year-round. The gravel road crosses muskegs and creek bottoms where black bears are common, especially during berry season. Winter brings a different challenge as the road becomes an ice track requiring chains or studs.
Moderate difficulty for most vehicles with decent ground clearance, though spring breakup can create serious mud holes that trap the unprepared. The springs are worth the modest technical challenge—wooden boardwalks lead to the pools where you can soak while watching the northern lights in winter. Best visited May through October when the access road is most reliable. Camping available at the provincial park, but book ahead during summer months.
