Liard River Hot Springs Access Road
Hidden hot springs deep in the Muskwa-Kechika wild.
Beyond the touristy Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park lies a network of backcountry access roads that penetrate deep into the Muskwa-Kechika wilderness. These old seismic and logging roads branch off Highway 97 near kilometer 496, threading through dense spruce forest and crossing multiple creek beds to reach remote hot springs known only to locals and serious bush pilots. The main route follows an abandoned winter road that serviced natural gas exploration in the 1980s.
This is serious 4×4 territory requiring lockers, aggressive tread, and recovery gear. Creek crossings can be waist-deep during spring melt, and fallen trees regularly block the trail. Best tackled July through September when water levels drop. No services for 200+ kilometers, so pack everything including extra fuel. You’ll find pristine wilderness camping and hot springs without crowds — exactly what Northern BC backcountry delivers when you earn it.
