Croatan National Forest Great Lake Road
Coastal pines and phosphate mine ruins.
Great Lake Road winds 12 miles through Croatan National Forest’s unique coastal ecosystem, where longleaf pines tower over carnivorous plants and blackwater creeks. The route follows old phosphate mining roads from the early 1900s, passing abandoned strip pits now filled with cypress-stained water and the ruins of the Havelock Phosphate Works near Catfish Lake.
Moderate difficulty with deep sand sections that’ll test your momentum and tire pressure skills. High-clearance vehicles recommended, though stock trucks with proper airing down can handle it. Wet seasons from November through March can make creek crossings sketchy. Excellent dispersed camping along the lake shores, and you’ll likely spot black bears, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and maybe an alligator or two in the deeper pools.
