Badlands Sage Creek Rim Road

Northern Badlands rim through buffalo country

Moderate

Sage Creek Rim Road traces the northern edge of Badlands National Park for 30 miles of maintained dirt that most tourists never see. The route starts at the Sage Creek Campground and follows the fossil-rich rim formations east toward the Roberts Prairie Dog Town, where you’ll spot buffalo, bighorn sheep, and the occasional black-footed ferret. The Hay Butte overlook marks the midpoint, offering views across the Cheyenne River Reservation that stretch to the horizon.

This rates Moderate due to washboard conditions and seasonal closures during wet weather. Any high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in dry conditions, but spring muddays can trap even 4WDs. May through October offers the best travel, with summer thunderstorms creating temporary impassable sections. No permits needed, but fuel up in Wall before heading out. You’ll get solitude, wildlife encounters, and some of the most expansive prairie views in the Dakotas without the National Park crowds.
