Buffalo Gap National Grassland Sage Creek Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Open grassland camping along Sage Creek Road in the heart of mixed-grass prairie. Sites are scattered across gentle hills with panoramic views of the Badlands to the east. Established fire rings mark the most popular spots, though you can camp anywhere on public land. Bison herds occasionally move through the area, and coyotes are common at dawn and dusk. No shade except scattered cottonwoods near seasonal drainages.

Access via Sage Creek Road from Highway 240, about 12 miles of maintained gravel. Road is rough but passable by any vehicle except after heavy rain when clay gets slick. Strong winds are common. Water and supplies in Wall, 25 miles east. Fire restrictions typically in effect July-September.
