Buffalo Gap National Grassland Conata Basin Dispersed Area
Conata Basin offers scattered camping opportunities across gently rolling mixed-grass prairie dotted with prairie dog towns. Sites are simply pull-offs along ranch roads where you can park on the grass without blocking cattle gates or water sources. The area provides classic Great Plains camping — endless horizons, spectacular sunrises, and the constant chatter of prairie dogs during active hours. Fire restrictions often in effect due to grass fire danger.
Access via maintained gravel ranch roads that become impassable when wet. No shade or windbreaks, so come prepared for weather extremes. Cattle share the range, so camp away from water sources and stock tanks. Best in late spring before summer heat sets in.
