Mackenzie Range Ice Road

When January temperatures hit -30°C and stay there for weeks, the muskeg bogs and lake chains of the Mackenzie Range freeze solid enough to support heavy mining equipment heading to remote natural gas operations. This unofficial winter road follows seismic lines and old logging routes north from Mile 293 of the Alaska Highway, crossing Tetsa Lake and winding through spruce and poplar forest to reach active drilling sites in the Muskwa Ranges. The route was originally cut for 1970s seismic surveys but now serves as the only winter access to several remote drilling operations and hunting camps.

Extreme winter conditions only — attempt this between January and March when ice thickness exceeds 24 inches, and even then it’s serious business requiring survival gear, emergency communication, and vehicles capable of operating in Arctic conditions. Ice roads can be deceiving and breakthrough is always possible. The reward is accessing some of the most remote wilderness in the northern Rockies, plus the chance to see active drilling operations and encounter wildlife that rarely sees humans. No services exist along the route and the nearest help is hours away even in good conditions.
