Wedge Overlook Road — San Rafael Swell to the Castle Valley Rim

Utah's Little Grand Canyon on the edge.

Moderate

Utah has a canyon for every occasion, but the Wedge Overlook earns its reputation every time you step out of the rig and look down. The road departs from the small town of Castle Dale, heading west across the sagebrush flats of Emery County before the ground simply disappears in front of you — a 1,000-foot plunge into the San Rafael River gorge that locals call Utah’s Little Grand Canyon. The track itself is a mix of packed dirt and clay that turns greasy and treacherous when wet, with a few rocky ledge sections on the approach to the canyon rim. Side spurs branch off to dispersed camping spots right on the edge, no fences, no guardrails.

This is a moderate route on dry days — a high-clearance 2WD can make it in summer, though 4WD is strongly recommended for the ledge sections and any wet-weather running. Avoid this road entirely when rain is in the forecast; the clay gumbo will strand a fully built rig. Spring and fall are the best seasons. No permit required. Fuel in Castle Dale before you leave. Cell service drops out fast once you leave the paved road. Bring your own water and plan to stay the night — the sunset over that canyon is worth every mile of dust.
