Wedge Overlook Road — San Rafael Swell Canyon Rim

Utah's Little Grand Canyon — no crowds, no guardrails.

Easy

Head north out of Castle Dale on the signed Wedge Overlook road and you’ll cover about 13 miles of packed dirt and occasional soft spots before the earth drops away at the rim of the San Rafael River gorge — a thousand-foot slot known locally as the Little Grand Canyon. The overlook hits you without warning, which is exactly the point. From here the river coils far below through Navajo sandstone the color of dried blood. Most people stop at the main overlook, but push further along the rim toward Mexican Mountain Road and the views keep giving. Early morning light on the canyon walls is worth setting an alarm for.

This is an easy to moderate route on a good dry day — a stock high-clearance truck handles it fine in summer. But Utah clay is not your friend when wet; this road becomes greasy, slick, and capable of swallowing rigs that have no business being there. Spring snow melt and monsoon season are real hazards. No permit, no fee. Nearest fuel and supplies in Price, about 35 miles north. Dispersed camping along the rim is allowed on BLM land — bring everything you need, including water. Cell service drops to nothing once you leave the highway corridor.
