Pothole Canyon to Wedge Overlook — San Rafael Swell North Circuit via Fuller Bottom Road
Utah's Little Grand Canyon, no crowds, no rails.
The Wedge Overlook is the payoff, but the drive through the north end of the San Rafael Swell is what earns it. Coming off Fuller Bottom Road from Castle Dale, you cross open sagebrush benches that slowly give way to the fractured sandstone of the Swell’s interior. The San Rafael River cuts a dark, winding slash through the plateau here — locals call it ‘the Little Grand Canyon’ and they’re not wrong. The route passes through Fuller Bottom, skirts the river bottom where cottonwoods crowd the banks, and climbs to the Wedge rim where you’re staring down a sheer 1,000-foot drop with zero guardrails and zero crowds. Side excursions into Wedge Canyon’s upper drainage add technical interest.
This is a high-clearance route rather than a technical 4×4 grinder — most of it is maintained gravel and two-track that a capable stock truck handles without drama. The stretch through the river bottom gets soft after rain and can become impassable when wet; Emery County roads turn to slick clay grease in moisture. Best season is March through May and September through November. No permit required. Water is not reliably available; carry everything you need. Dispersed camping along the rim is outstanding and completely undeveloped. Fuel in Castle Dale before you leave pavement. Cell service is absent the entire route.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I need a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner is fine. The route is rated moderate — dirt and gravel with some rocky sections — but nothing requires a lift or lockers. A high-clearance 2WD can manage it in dry conditions, though 4WD is safer if the surface is wet.
When is this trail passable and what kills access most often?
Best windows are March–May and September–November. Summer heat in the San Rafael Swell is brutal and monsoon rains can turn the dirt sections into impassable mud. Winter snow and ice at elevation can close it without warning — always check conditions with the BLM Price Field Office before heading out.
Do I need a permit to drive this route or camp along it?
No permit required. It's BLM land managed by the Price Field Office, dispersed camping is allowed, and there's no fee. Follow Leave No Trace — camp on already-impacted surfaces and pack out everything.
What's the hardest section on this route and what should I actually expect?
The roughest terrain is typically along Fuller Bottom Road where the surface gets rocky and rutted closer to the canyon rim. Nothing here is extreme, but loose rock and shelf-road edges demand you're paying attention — this isn't a fire road cruise. Take it slow near the Wedge Overlook approach and watch your line.
How far is the nearest gas and water, and is there any cell service on the route?
Castle Dale is your last reliable fuel stop — top off there. There is zero cell service on this route, so download offline maps before you leave. No potable water exists on trail; carry everything you need for the full 26 miles plus contingency.
