Keweenaw Peninsula Copper Harbor Trail
Copper country ghosts and Superior overlooks
The old mining roads above Copper Harbor wind through what was once the richest copper ground in North America, where Ojibwe mining pits date back a thousand years and 1840s miners followed their lead to fortunes in native copper. This route threads between massive tailings piles and flooded mine shafts, climbing to overlooks where Lake Superior stretches to the horizon like an inland sea. The technical section at Horseshoe Harbor requires careful line choice through loose basalt that’ll test both tires and nerves.
Moderate difficulty with a few expert sections where winter frost has shattered the roadway into ankle-twisting rubble. High-clearance 4WD mandatory, low-range gearing helpful for the steep basalt climbs. Best run July through September when Superior’s weather is most predictable. No permits but respect private mining claims still active in the area. Limited dispersed camping — most sites are too rocky. Bring layers — Superior can drop temperatures 20 degrees in an hour when the fog rolls in. This is Michigan’s true north country, where the mining ghosts still outnumber the living.
