Gibb River Road — Imintji to Galvans Gorge via the Kimberley Ranges Heart

The stretch between Imintji Community and Galvans Gorge is where the Kimberley starts to feel genuinely wild. The corrugated red dirt of the Gibb demands your full attention — wheel ruts from last wet season baked into concrete ridges that’ll rattle your fillings loose if you push above 80km/h. Galvans Gorge itself is the payoff: a short walk from the road drops you into a fig-canopied swimming hole where freshwater crocodiles sun themselves on the ledge above the waterfall. The Aboriginal rock art site above the gorge is one of the most accessible on the Gibb and shouldn’t be rushed through.
Moderate difficulty for a built-up vehicle with decent clearance, but the corrugations punish everything — check your bullbar mounts and recovery gear before you leave Derby. A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum; an unladen stock SUV is going to get hurt. Best run May through October before the wet closes the road entirely. Fuel at Imintji Store when it’s open, but carry reserves — distances are real out here. No permit required for transit. Bush camp anywhere reasonable off the track and you’ll wake to absolute silence and an absurd number of stars.
