Gibb River Road — Derby to Kununurra via the Kimberley Gorge Country (Dry Season Classic, Galvans Gorge to Manning Gorge, Northern Traverse)
The Kimberley's great red dirt spine.
The Gibb River Road is the Kimberley’s spine — a corrugated, bulldust-choked pastoral track that has been humbling city rigs and rewarding prepared travellers since the cattlemen first pushed it through in the 1960s. The northern traverse between Galvans Gorge and Manning Gorge captures the road’s best middle section: swimming holes ringed by ancient sandstone, boab trees the size of water towers, and creek crossings that will test your approach angles before breakfast. Manning Gorge itself demands a river crossing to access the upper pools — get the depth wrong and you’re sleeping in your cab waiting for a tow.
Rated moderate to difficult depending on the season and how many wet-season ruts have been graded. A minimum 70-series or equivalent with a long-range tank, recovery gear, and a working HF or satellite communicator is non-negotiable — mobile coverage is zero from Derby to Kununurra. Drive it May through September only; the road closes or becomes genuinely impassable in the wet. Fuel at Imintji Store, Mount Barnett Roadhouse, or El Questro. Pay the gorge access fees at Mount Barnett. What you get in return: a sense of scale that few roads on earth deliver.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Land Cruiser 200 Series handle the Gibb River Road without a lift?
Yes — a stock 200 Series with a high-clearance 4WD setup will handle the Gibb fine in dry season. What kills rigs here isn't lack of lift, it's inadequate tyre choice and insufficient fuel range; run at minimum an all-terrain tyre and carry enough fuel for 500km+ between reliable sources.
When does the Gibb River Road typically open and close each year?
The road is generally open May through September during the dry season. Wet season flooding (October–April) frequently makes it impassable or outright closes it — check current conditions with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley before you commit to any dates near the shoulder months.
Do I need a permit to drive the Gibb River Road and access the gorges?
Yes — sections of the route cross private station country including Mount Barnett Station, and gorge access like Manning Gorge requires paying an entry fee directly at the station homestead. Carry cash; EFTPOS is not guaranteed out here.
How gnarly is Manning Gorge crossing and what's the hardest part of this section?
The Manning River crossing is the most serious obstacle on this stretch — it's a rocky, uneven ford that can run thigh-deep even in dry season depending on recent rains. Pick your line carefully, walk it first, and don't rush it; the approach track to the gorge camping area also has corrugations and bulldust that will shake loose anything not properly secured.
Is there any fuel or water available between Derby and Kununurra on the Gibb?
Mount Barnett Roadhouse is the main fuel stop mid-route, but availability and pricing are station-dependent — don't count on it as a sure thing without calling ahead. Water is available at some gorge camping spots but treat everything; carry a minimum 20 litres per person as a baseline and refill whenever you have a confirmed clean source.
