Dixie Mainline Trail – Withlacoochee State Forest
Railroad-grade adventure through Florida's phosphate country
The Dixie Mainline follows the old Seaboard Air Line Railway bed through Withlacoochee State Forest, where trains once hauled phosphate and timber from Florida’s interior to northern markets. This 47-mile main artery connects to dozens of side trails through palmetto flats and hardwood hammocks, crossing the Withlacoochee River at several points. The notorious Croom section turns into a mud fest after summer rains, with clay-bottom holes that have claimed more than a few weekend warriors.
Easy to moderate depending on recent weather, but don’t let the wide trail fool you – wet season turns sections into technical mud challenges. High-clearance vehicles recommended, 4WD when muddy. Popular with ATV crowds on weekends, quieter midweek. No permits required, good cell service near staging areas. Open year-round with spring turkey season bringing serious backcountry traffic. This trail system offers legitimate Florida backwoods experience just an hour from Tampa, proving wilderness doesn’t always mean elevation.
