Green Swamp East Tract Loop
Florida's hidden watershed where springs birth rivers
The Green Swamp’s East Tract covers 52,000 acres of some of Florida’s most important watershed, feeding both the Withlacoochee and Hillsborough rivers through a maze of cypress domes, wet prairies, and sand hill communities. Multiple interconnecting forest roads create a challenging loop system where wrong turns lead to dead-ends in waist-deep swamp water. The main route follows what locals call the Bombing Range Road, a relic from WWII training exercises that still turns up metal fragments and concrete bunkers.
Difficult rating comes from route-finding challenges and seasonal flooding – GPS doesn’t help much when roads disappear underwater for months at a time. High-clearance 4WD essential during wet season; even bone-dry conditions leave deep ruts and soft sand sections. No permits required but expect zero facilities and questionable cell service. Best attempted November through May when water levels drop and snakes stay dormant. You’ll experience Florida’s hydrological heart where underground springs bubble up through limestone, creating the clear-water rivers that made this state famous.
