Shenandoah National Park Rapidan Fire Road

Herbert Hoover's presidential fishing retreat road

Moderate

Rapidan Fire Road winds 4.1 miles through the heart of Shenandoah National Park to Camp Hoover, the rustic presidential retreat where Herbert Hoover escaped Washington’s heat and pressure from 1929 to 1932. The gated fire road follows the original access route to Hoover’s fishing camp, descending 1,000 feet through second-growth forest to the confluence of Mill Prong and Laurel Prong, where the President’s cabin still stands among towering hemlocks. The road surface alternates between hard-packed gravel and rocky sections that require careful tire placement, especially the steep descent near Hazeltop Ridge.

Park Service regulations restrict this route to special permitted tours only—you can’t drive it independently. However, the Park Service offers guided truck tours during summer months that provide the only legal motorized access to this historic site. The tours run from late May through October, weather permitting, and require advance reservations through the park’s website. If you’re looking for legal 4WD action in Shenandoah, stick to Skyline Drive’s paved ribbon. But for those fascinated by presidential history and pristine Appalachian streams where native brook trout still survive, the guided Rapidan tour offers a unique glimpse into both natural and political history.
