Factory Butte Sandstone Formation
An isolated sandstone monolith standing 1,500 feet above the surrounding desert, carved from Entrada and Curtis formations over millions of years. The butte’s distinctive shape earned its industrial nickname, and its slopes provide challenging terrain for rock crawlers and ATVs. From the top, views stretch across the San Rafael Desert to the Henry Mountains and Capitol Reef country.
Located about 20 miles north of Hanksville via a well-maintained dirt road suitable for most vehicles. The area is managed by BLM as an open OHV zone, making it popular with motorized recreation users. Summer temperatures can be extreme, while winter brings occasional snow. No facilities or water available – come self-sufficient.
