Burnt Mountain Fire Lookout

Burnt Mountain Fire Lookout sits at 2,253 feet above the Olympic Peninsula, housed in a classic L-4 ground house design typical of Pacific Northwest fire detection stations. During fire season, it’s staffed by Forest Service personnel who monitor the dense Douglas fir and hemlock forests below for signs of smoke. The lookout provides sweeping views east across Hood Canal toward Seattle’s skyline and the Cascade Range, with Mount Rainier prominent on clear days.

The lookout is reached via Forest Road 2610 off Highway 101, a maintained gravel road suitable for most vehicles. The final approach includes several switchbacks but remains accessible to standard passenger cars. Active from June through September depending on fire danger levels, with the structure closed to public entry when staffed. Several primitive camping spots exist along the access road for those wanting to experience sunrise from this elevated vantage point.
