Hurricane Ridge Road to Obstruction Point
Alpine exposure above the Olympic Peninsula
The gravel spur beyond Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center climbs through subalpine meadows to Obstruction Point’s 6,150-foot perch, where the Olympic Mountains drop away into the Strait of Juan de Fuca thousands of feet below. This 8-mile mountain road carved into cliffsides offers zero guardrails and 360-degree views that’ll make your passenger grip the door handle. The final approach to Obstruction Point requires threading between massive boulders on a shelf barely wider than your truck.
Moderate difficulty with extreme consequences if you screw up — high-clearance 4WD recommended for confident navigation of washouts and loose rock sections. Open roughly July through September when snow clears. No permits required but Olympic National Park charges entry fees. Carry extra water since none available beyond the visitor center. This is what high-country driving looks like when the Pacific Northwest shows off — pristine alpine wilderness without the Colorado crowds.
