Weston Pass Road — South Park to Arkansas River Valley via Historic Mining Divide
Silver-era freight road over a forgotten divide.
Weston Pass was a major freight and stage route in the 1870s and 1880s, hauling silver ore out of the Leadville boom camps before the railroads shut it down. The road climbs out of the wide basin of South Park through spruce and fir, topping out at 11,921 feet on a broad, windswept saddle with panoramic views of the Mosquito and Sawatch ranges. The descent west drops fast and loose toward the Arkansas River, with a few embedded rock sections and eroded switchbacks near the summit that will push a stock vehicle to its limits. The creek crossing on the west side, Union Creek, can run hard in June and early July — time it wrong and you’re turning around.
This is a moderate to difficult run depending on season and recent weather. High-clearance 4WD is required; lockers help on the steeper west-side sections when wet. Best window is mid-July through September — snow lingers on the summit well into summer and returns early in fall. No permit required. Fuel up in Fairplay or Buena Vista before you go — there’s nothing out there. Dispersed camping is solid on both sides of the pass. Cell service is gone once you leave pavement. The reward is one of the quietest, most historically loaded crossings in the entire Colorado high country.
