Allegheny National Forest Morrison Trail

Oil boom railroad grade through pristine forest

Moderate

Morrison Trail follows an old railroad grade through the heart of Allegheny National Forest, connecting the ghost town of Morrison with the remote Tionesta Scenic and Research Natural Areas. Built in the 1880s to haul oil and lumber, the route still shows evidence of Pennsylvania’s petroleum boom with rusted drilling equipment scattered through the forest. The trail passes through classic Appalachian mixed forest, crossing Minister Creek twice before climbing to overlook the Allegheny Reservoir from Thompson Point.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicle but manageable for stock 4WDs with careful driving. Two creek crossings can be tricky during spring melt, but summer conditions are excellent. No permits needed for day trips, but overnight camping requires checking with Bradford Ranger District. Best accessed from Forest Road 127 near Hearts Content Recreation Area. The 16-mile loop offers excellent dispersed camping spots and some of the state’s best brook trout fishing, plus fall hunting season means wearing orange October through December.
