Catskill Park Kaaterskill High Peak Fire Tower Road

Steepest drive in the Catskill Mountains

Difficult

The fire tower road to Kaaterskill High Peak is the steepest legal drive in the Catskills, gaining 1,800 feet in just 3.2 miles of switchbacking dirt track. Built in the 1930s to service the steel fire tower, this route punches straight up the mountain’s north face through dense hardwood forest. The final quarter-mile is brutally steep—grades hitting 25%—before emerging at the restored tower with commanding views across the entire Catskill range. On clear days, you can see five states from the observation deck.

This is difficult terrain requiring 4WD low range and excellent brakes. The descent is harder than the climb—engine braking is essential to avoid brake fade on the sustained grades. Loose stone and washouts demand careful tire placement. Open May through October when snow’s clear. No permits needed but respect the gate closures during hunting season. Fuel up in Hunter—this short route burns more gas than you’d expect fighting gravity. You earn bragging rights and the best view in the Catskills without hiking.
