Tioga State Forest Hammond Lake Technical Challenge
CCC camp ruins via gnarly creek crossing challenge
Forest Road 227 and its connecting spurs carve through some of the roughest country in Tioga State Forest, following old CCC roads built in the 1930s around what’s now Hammond Lake. The main challenge comes at Boone Run Ford, where the creek has carved a rocky chute that demands careful tire placement and steady throttle control. From there, the route climbs through dense hemlock stands to reach the foundations of Camp S-51, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed 200 men who built these very roads you’re driving.
This is expert-level terrain that separates the posers from the pilots — loose rocks, off-camber sections, and grades that hit 25%. A built truck with lockers, 33-inch tires, and armor is the minimum ticket to ride. Spring runoff makes the creek crossings dangerous, so stick to late summer through early fall. No permits needed, but let someone know your route. The payoff is genuine solitude and some of the best trout fishing in the state once you reach the upper Hammond drainage.
